In summer, the nearby dams offer ideal conditions for inline skating, cycling, and walking. The well-known Richard-Schirrmann-Weg trail takes hiking enthusiasts right through Herscheid.

Herscheid also has a lot to offer culturally: the Märkische Museumseisenbahn (Museum Railway) with its Hüinghausen–Plettenberg Köbbinghausen route is a popular destination for day trips. Landmarks such as the 300-year-old Spieker, the historic Apostelkirche (first mentioned in 1072), the Ahe Hammer (since 1562) and the Robert Kolb Tower (built in 1913, 18 m high on the Nordhelle) characterize the townscape.

Social life is vibrant with festivals such as the Schützenfest, the Räriner Bergfest, the Kürbismarkt, fire brigade festivals, and various soccer events. The neighborhood community is very strong—people help each other and enjoy a good relationship with their neighbors.

Economically, Herscheid is characterized by long-established companies that actively participate in community life through sponsorship. Particularly noteworthy is Gustav Alberts GmbH (GAH), a leading manufacturer of home and garden products. Other companies mainly supply products for the automotive industry. Shops for everyday needs are available, but retail trade has largely withdrawn.
