An excellent infrastructure, proximity to Lake Bigge, two adjacent highways, a lively community life, and more than 700 years of history—the district capital of Olpe offers all this and much more. It is located in the southwestern part of the Sauerland region and is surrounded by the Ebbegebirge, Rothaargebirge, Siegerland, and Bergisches Land mountains. In earlier years, the abundance of forests, ore, and water formed the basis for the emergence of iron and copper smelting works, hammer mills, and pan smithies, of which Olpe is still proud today.
Another attraction in Olpe is the Pannenklöpper, a historic doll's carriage from the 18th century, which is considered the town's landmark. It recalls the tradition of Olpe's craftsmanship and attracts both tourists and history enthusiasts who want to learn more about the old craft.
Tourism has also become an important economic factor. Olpe has an exceptionally good infrastructure. Around 150 shops in the city center, the Olpe leisure pool with various pools, thermal areas, a sauna landscape, and an outdoor pool, numerous schools—including two high schools—a wide variety of doctors' offices, and the St. Martinus Hospital in the middle of the city leave nothing to be desired. Many restaurants, including several "cult pubs," invite Olpe residents and visitors to linger.
Olpe is nicknamed the "city of a thousand lime trees" because countless lime trees have been planted here since the beginning of the last century. In the center of Olpe and the many different small towns, many customs, some of which are centuries old, are kept alive. There is also a lively club scene here. The absolute highlight is the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) "auf dem Ämmerich" in mid-July.
