Building tip: Plan living spaces in accordance with state building regulations
However, many owners are unaware that a roof or basement room is not automatically approved as living space if the premises were declared for other purposes when the tenant moved in. For example, different states have different minimum heights for living spaces that must be observed. In addition, a second escape route and, in some places, even an additional parking space must be planned.
Construction experts therefore advise planning attic or basement rooms for later use from the outset and obtaining approval from the relevant building authority. When it comes to renting out property, owners should also be aware of the regulations in the different states and submit their applications accordingly.
