Checklist – what is important to you when it comes to living in old age?
To ensure that your property meets your needs in old age, you should consider a few important aspects:
Living space
- How much space do I or do we really need?
- Does the size of my/our property meet our needs?
Facilities
- Is it necessary to install wider doors?
- What about a barrier-free bathroom with a floor-level shower?
- Are stairs accessible for everyone, or is a ground floor apartment necessary?
- If moving is not an option, could a stair lift be a solution?
- Do I need disabled access?
- Are the floors slip-resistant?
Location and surroundings
- How easy is it to get to medical facilities and doctors' offices?
- How close is the nearest supermarket?
- How long does it take to reach friends and family?
- Is there a bus stop nearby or is public transportation easily accessible?
- Can I imagine leaving my familiar surroundings?
Adapting your living situation to your age and needs
- What options do I have if my home cannot be converted to suit my needs in old age?
- Can my family care for me in my current home?
- Is it possible to move in with a family member?
- Retirement homes, assisted living, or senior co-living—what options are available to me if I need to move?
- Retirement: Where can I find information about this option?
- How can I secure lifelong right of residence?
