Tiny houses – small houses, big happiness?
The advantages are obvious at first glance: Tiny houses don't take up much space outside and offer everything you need inside in a small space. They are usually made from sustainable materials such as wood and prefabricated modules. This also means that they can be built quickly. If a tiny house has wheels, flexibility is another advantage that speaks in favor of this type of micro-home.
How big is a tiny house and how much does it cost?
While building regulations in the USA stipulate that a tiny house cannot be larger than 37 square meters, there are currently no criteria for size in Germany. As a rule of thumb, tiny houses in this country are up to 50 square meters in size. The size of a particular house always depends on who is moving in. For a single person, 20 square meters is sufficient, but for a small family of three, it should probably be twice that. The price range also depends on the size, furnishings, and materials used—it can range from $5,000 to $45,000.
Buy a tiny house or build your own?
In Germany, there are more and more manufacturers offering complete solutions that can be adapted to individual needs. It is also possible to build a tiny house yourself. However, this quickly becomes a complex undertaking. Precise planning is required, as every detail is important when it comes to the floor plan, structural stability, and fittings. Which built-in cabinets should be used where? Will the structure support the bed on the second level? These are just two of the many questions that a tiny house builder has to ask themselves. It is better to consult an architect and a construction company. Your real estate agent can advise you on this and also put you in touch with regional contacts. But before you start planning the construction, you should know exactly where your new home is going to be.
Where can I put a tiny house?
Like any other house, a tiny house can be built on a building plot. This also means that the same rules apply to the purchase. Even though a small house requires less building space, good infrastructure and a nice outdoor area are just as important. Some tiny house owners have rented a permanent spot at a campground.
