Save on moving costs
Selling your property due to personal changes can be quite stressful. This not only includes finding a new property and selling the old one, but also planning the move. With the right planning, a move can go smoothly and harmoniously. If you don't plan it properly, it can be not only chaotic, but also really expensive.
The right moving date helps save on moving costs.
For example, choosing the right moving date can have a positive effect on your wallet. First, consider whether you want to use a private vehicle or hire a moving company. If you prefer a moving company, avoid peak moving times. This means that moving companies are more expensive at the end of the month and on weekends due to high demand. Moving companies are usually cheapest during the week and between the 6th and 13th or 18th and 24th of the month.
Use the move to sort through your household goods. Get rid of things you no longer need. This sorting pays off in two ways. Firstly, you will get an overview of what you really own and what you might still need, and secondly, sorting things out minimizes the volume of your move and thus also the transport costs. If you sell the things you don't need, you may even have some extra money for the household budget.
In addition to the moving company, the costs for moving boxes and packing materials should not be overlooked and can put a big dent in your moving budget. It is advisable to ask nearby supermarkets, electronics stores, and hardware stores for packaging materials that are no longer needed. Clothing can also be used as padding and filling material.
Save on moving costs with taxes.
If you are moving for professional reasons, this move is also worthwhile from a tax perspective, as the total amount can be claimed as income-related expenses. If you are moving for personal reasons, you can claim back 20 percent of the deductible expenses, up to a maximum of $4,000, from your taxes. If people change their place of residence for health reasons, the tax office recognizes costs that exceed the reasonable personal contribution as extraordinary expenses. In this case, those moving must submit a medical certificate to the tax office.
