From the office to the kitchen table: working from home
If you are working from home for the first time, you should not expect your usual workflow. The distractions of everyday life in your own home are too great. It is therefore essential that you discuss this with your family in advance and draw up a work schedule so that you can work without interruption.
The most important step to working successfully is to find a quiet place to work. It doesn't matter which room this is in, as long as it is quiet and functional.
Working from home requires planning and discipline
Working from home requires a great deal of planning and discipline. Once you have found the right workplace, start defining and writing down your deadlines and goals. This is particularly important because time tends to pass very quickly when working from home. If you are not tied to fixed working hours, find out at what time of day you work best. If you know your most productive hours, you can work efficiently in less time and thus get more work done successfully.
Find out how long your concentration span is. Depending on this, you can then plan your breaks. If you feel that your concentration is waning after half an hour of work, take a short break and then continue. Breaks are also important when working from home, otherwise mistakes are inevitable.
Working from home can be lonely
Most people miss the social aspect of working from home. Working from home can be lonely. Fortunately, video chat technology has come so far that you can communicate from anywhere. So you should do just that. Communicate with your colleagues. Let your boss know how far you've gotten. Meet online as a group and discuss not only work, but also how you feel at home. You'll quickly realize that you're not alone with your problems.
Even at home, you have to call it a day at some point. Easier said than done when you're already at home. Shut down your PC, close your laptop, and turn off your smartphone. Establish a routine at home as well. Anything you didn't manage to do during the day can be done the next day.
