Motorhome trend: vacation home on four wheels
What fascinates people about motorhomes?
They offer a sense of freedom. Vacations become mini adventures: you can plan your vacation however you want, especially when it comes to timing. Someone in Hamburg, for example, can decide on Friday to spend the weekend at the beach. The motorhome is parked outside, so all they have to do is pack quickly and hit the road.
What do customers value most when buying a motorhome?
It is particularly important to have a fully equipped vehicle. This has developed over the last few years: today, the vehicle has to have several features for the customer to even consider buying it. Everything has to be there, from a cooking area to a wellness shower. In addition, the shower and toilet areas should be separate, and great importance is attached to sleeping comfort.
The equipment in motorhomes is now reaching luxury levels. Are they now also an alternative to vacation rentals for people who don't want a traditional camping vacation?
I would say yes. We don't sell the absolute luxury models starting at 250,000 euros, but our prices top out at around 150,000 euros. Even in this segment, the vehicles are up to nine meters long and designed to give you the feeling of having your own retreat. It's also possible to close the door behind you.
What was the most unusual motorhome you have ever seen?
I'm always fascinated by Vario's mobile homes. They're a luxury manufacturer that lets customers customize their vehicles down to the smallest detail. The models are built on a truck chassis. There's even a garage for the convertible underneath. I'm impressed by the fact that these vehicles cost eight or nine hundred thousand euros and yet they still manage to sell them.
You are also active abroad. How does the market for motorhomes in countries such as Norway or Korea differ from that in Germany?
Korea is a very young market. The camping concept hasn't been around there for very long. We've been there for five years now, and at that time they had only just started developing campsites. There are also no motorhomes there, only caravans. We can't import any motorhomes from Germany to Korea at the moment because the emissions standards are different. They are actually much further ahead there. Norway, on the other hand, is a completely different market. It is a very rich country, so almost all vehicles there have high-end equipment. Norwegians place a lot of value on luxury and high quality.
How do motorhomes hold their value? Is it better to buy a new or a used motorhome?
Fortunately, the value of motorhomes is different from that of cars. This is also due to the individual equipment. If you want to sell a motorhome after a year, the loss in value is not so dramatic and this decreases significantly over the years. If you want to return a motorhome after five years or buy a new one, you will find that the loss in value is very low. Of course, this also has to do with the market. The used car market is virtually empty, which means that values are fairly stable. It is therefore worth investing in a new vehicle.
