Both have different advantages and disadvantages. It depends on your personal situation.

Living closer to your grandchildren again
It's one thing that Sabine and Jürgen miss their grandchildren. But since Claudia moved out, their house on the outskirts of town has become too big for them. At first, they had plans for Claudia's old room. It was supposed to remain her room so she could always come home. Later, it became a guest room, then a study. It was used maybe three times a year.
Living requirements in old age
Gardening was also becoming increasingly difficult for the couple. They both wondered whether their house still met their living requirements. This idea matured over a long period of time. But now, after several years, they have decided to move to their daughter's town to be closer to their family. This was also prompted by the question: "What if one of us needs care?"
Rent or sell?
The next question was: "What will become of our little house?" At first, they thought about renting it out. The rental income would supplement their pension. However, they saw a difficulty in managing the property from afar. If something happened, they didn't want to have to drive such a long way.
On the other hand, they expected to get a high price for the property. This would certainly enable them to buy an apartment suitable for their age. But they were unsure how to juggle the search for a new property and the purchase. After all, they could only buy a new property once the other one had been sold. But where would they live in the meantime?
Ask the professionals
Before Sabine and Jürgen wanted to make a decision, they decided to seek advice from a real estate professional. They looked for a reputable real estate agent in their area. He advised them on their options for renting and selling. He determined the value of their property and calculated how much rent they could ask for. As the agent had a nationwide network of other agents, he was able to recommend a professional in Claudia's city who could start looking for an apartment suitable for seniors.
In the end, Sabine and Jürgen decided to sell. The real estate agent in their old neighborhood took care of everything while the other agent found an apartment that suited their living needs. With the help of the two agents, they were able to find a good temporary solution for the transition from their old property to their new one.
Now Sabine and Jürgen see their grandchildren more often. They occasionally come over after school to do their homework when Claudia and Felix have to work late.
