Living in old age: Moving into a nursing home
Once the decision to move into a nursing home has been made, it is time to start organizing the move. It is advisable to seek external professional expertise for this. Long-term care insurance providers can help you find the right home. When it comes to real estate, a regional real estate agent will know what options are available. They can offer individualized and suitable solutions.
Rent, bequeath, or sell?
Often, the property is intended to remain in the family. However, this is not always feasible. Anyone considering renting out the property must be aware that this entails a number of obligations and rights. The rental agreements must be legally binding, and the building must be managed and maintained. Depending on the condition of the property, money may need to be invested in advance for energy-efficient renovation or modernization.
Another option is to bequeath the property, either as a preliminary heir or in a will. But beware: in addition to the beneficiaries named in the will, other relatives will also have a legal right to the property inheritance. Often, communities of heirs are formed, which in the worst case can lead to legal disputes. Even with preliminary heirs, family disputes are usually unavoidable.
Selling the property is primarily an option if no one wants to live in it, renting it out is not an option for various reasons, or if relatives cannot afford a property that still needs to be financed. But even if relatives live far away and the parents move to a nursing home nearby, selling is often the best solution. The proceeds from the sale can also be used to pay for the nursing home. The decision about what to do with the property should be well thought out. It is therefore always a good idea to bring a regional real estate agent on board as an expert.
Finding a good nursing home
Retirement homes often do not have the best reputation. Overworked staff, too little time for residents, and poor treatment are just some of the reasons for this. This makes choosing the right retirement home all the more important. To this end, the government introduced a quality assessment for nursing homes in 2019, which is not only carried out by the homes themselves. External experts also carry out checks. The results of the quality assessment can be found via nursing care insurance funds such as the AOK nursing home search or the company health insurance fund. But before starting the search, those affected and their relatives should draw up a checklist in advance with all the important conditions, wishes, and requirements. Visiting potential facilities is also essential when choosing the right home.
