When the property is no longer suitable for your age
At 95 years old, Gerda Meyer was still quite mobile and active. She took pride in still being able to go for daily walks and do small errands on her own, requiring little assistance otherwise. She was a sociable lady who loved to chat with friends and neighbors during her daily walk through the park. But then she fell in the stairwell of her apartment, resulting in a complicated hip fracture. At first, Gerda Meyer's relatives took care of her, but they were soon overwhelmed by this 24-hour task. "I didn't know where to turn. I have a family with children and a job myself. Since the fall, I had no more evenings off, no breaks, no vacation. At some point, I just couldn't do it anymore," recalls 50-year-old Claudia Meyer. The family decided to look for a suitable care facility, even though Gerda Meyer, like many people in need of care, was afraid of giving up her beloved home and moving to a completely new environment.
Are you and your family currently in a similar situation? Are you also struggling to make the right decision for your beloved parents or grandparents? Regardless of whether they become in need of care relatively suddenly, like Gerda Meyer, or more gradually, as is often the case with dementia, you are probably like most relatives and not adequately prepared to deal with this situation for the first time.
In general, a senior care facility is the better choice for you if
- Your relative has few contacts but would like more interaction,
- the home is not suitable for outpatient care,
- You do not live nearby or do not have the capacity,
- the care requirements are very high
- or if they have progressive dementia.
And remember: a new home in a professionally run and lovingly managed care facility can also be the start of a new and positive chapter in life, offering not only care but also plenty of social interaction and physical and cultural activities. "At first, I couldn't imagine settling in, but everyone here is very nice to me. I do my exercises every day, bingo is on the program in the afternoons, and I even got to go to the theater again recently," reports Gerda Meyer.
